Sikkim Legislators Attend First National Legislators’ Conference in Mumbai

A delegation of Sikkim legislators led by Speaker Arun Upreti attended the first National Legislators’ Conference on “Role of Legislators in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals” in Mumbai on June 15-16, 2023. The conference was organized by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in association with the Maharashtra government.

The delegation from Sikkim included Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Deputy Chief Minister Shrikant Sharma, Speaker Arun Upreti, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Bhim Hang Limboo, and Minister for Urban Development and Housing MT Gyaltsen Lepcha.

The conference was attended by over 1,000 legislators from across the country. The speakers at the conference included Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The speakers discussed the role of legislators in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They stressed the importance of working together to address the challenges of climate change, poverty, and inequality.

The Sikkim delegation also held a meeting with the NDA leadership to discuss the party’s plans for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. The NDA is hoping to form the next government in Sikkim.

In his address at the conference, Speaker Arun Upreti said that Sikkim is committed to achieving the SDGs. He said that the state has already made significant progress in areas such as education, health, and agriculture.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said that Sikkim is a model for sustainable development. He said that the state has been able to achieve this through a combination of good governance and people’s participation.
