Sikkim is in mourning today following the death of Thupten Rapgyal, a renowned sports personality and coach. Rapgyal, who was 72, died at STNM Hospital in Gangtok on Thursday morning.

Rapgyal was a former national-level footballer who represented Sikkim in the Santosh Trophy and Federation Cup. He later turned to coaching and had a successful career, leading Sikkim to several state and national championships.

Rapgyal was also a mentor to many young footballers, and his death has been met with widespread sadness and grief. Sikkim Chief Minister PS Golay, who is also a former footballer, led the tributes, saying that Rapgyal was “a father figure to sportspersons in Sikkim”.

“He was a great coach and a wonderful human being,” Golay said. “He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

Rapgyal’s funeral will be held on Friday at Gangtok’s Deorali Ground. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
